Spencer Educational Foundation’s Funding Their Future Gala Raises $1.9 Million; Lockton Companies Pledges Additional $1 Million of Support

Annual Spencer Gala Sets Fundraising High-Water Mark

New York, NY — September 23, 2025 – The Spencer Educational Foundation announced that its annual Funding Their Future Gala generated more than $1.9 million, a new high-water mark, to advance its mission of supporting the next generation of risk management and insurance professionals.

Underscoring the industry’s commitment to talent development, Spencer’s esteemed Gala Honoree, Lockton U.S. President Tim Ryan, announced an additional $1 million pledge to further bolster the Foundation’s ability to provide scholarships, internships, and experiential learning grants.

“For decades, Spencer has played a critical role in preparing students for meaningful careers in our industry,” said Ryan. “Speaking with several Spencer Scholars was the highlight of the night. Some are the first in their families to attend college. Some are working multiple jobs to pay for school. Their determination is inspiring, and it reminds us that our role isn’t just about financial support—it’s about showing up with our time, our mentoring, and real-world experiences that set students up for success. This is a shared responsibility, and Lockton is proud to invest in the future of our profession by supporting the Foundation’s mission.”

Ryan also highlighted the industry’s ongoing need to attract and develop talent with a wide range of skills. “Insurance offers a broad and rewarding set of career paths,” he said. “The more we can arm students with experience, access, and support early in their careers, the stronger our industry will be in the years to come.”

Lockton has a long-standing partnership with Spencer. In 2004, following the passing of Lockton’s founder, the firm established the John T. Lockton Memorial Scholarship to honor his legacy and create opportunities for students entering the field of insurance. Since then, Lockton has contributed nearly $1 million in scholarships, along with mentoring and programming support.

“The results of this year’s Gala demonstrate the industry’s unwavering dedication to cultivate future talent,” said Johnell Holly, SVP at FM and Chair of the Spencer Board of Directors. “Lockton’s generous contribution on top of our Gala fundraising result amplifies the impact of these efforts and enables Spencer to expand its programming to meet the increasing needs of students and educators and to promote careers in insurance.”

Close to 600 senior insurance executives attended the Funding Their Future Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street on Thursday, Sept. 18 to celebrate Spencer’s mission and invest in the talent pipeline critical to the industry’s long-term success.

With 87 cents of every dollar spent on programs that advance the mission, Spencer proudly focuses all efforts on the development of insurance industry talent. For additional information about the Spencer Educational Foundation and opportunities to contribute, please visit www.spencered.org.

“Rick was a giant in our industry and his roots in property insurance ran deep,” said Lori Goltermann, CEO of Regions at Aon. “He built a reputation as a rare talent with exceptional technical acumen and an incredible ability to connect with people. He used his leadership position to elevate others. Whether speaking to a summer intern or a Fortune 500 client, Rick treated everyone with the same level of dignity and respect. It is rare to find someone in our industry who didn’t consider him a friend and I count myself fortunate for having known and worked alongside him.”

Miller spent time with Industrial Risk Insurers (IRI) before joining Alexander & Alexander Inc., which was later bought by Aon, before returning to IRI to run its New York City office. He later worked at American International Group Inc. before rejoining Aon in 2005 as chief broking officer for national property. He was named practice leader in 2016 and ran Aon’s annual property symposium for the past 15 years.

“Spencer is deeply moved by the opportunity to commemorate Rick Miller, one of the industry’s greatest,” said Megan Miller, Spencer’s executive director. “By providing financial assistance to high-achieving students pursuing a path in risk management and insurance, we aim to inspire a new wave of professionals who share Rick's passion for the property sector.”

Applicants for the scholarship will be selected based on their academic performance, leadership qualities and dedication to pursuing a career in the insurance industry. The scholarship fund will not only offer financial support but also provide recipients with lifelong career support, mentorship opportunities and a chance to attend Aon’s Property Symposium annually.

Students interested in applying for the Rick Miller Property Risk Management Scholarship are encouraged to visit the Spencer website (www.spencered.org/scholarships) for more information on eligibility criteria and application details. FM Global Awards US$1 Million Grant to the Spencer Educational Foundation

Johnston, RI (April 24, 2024) — Commercial property insurer FM Global today announced it has provided a US$1 million grant to the Spencer Educational Foundation. The grant, which will be distributed over a four-year period, will support programming aimed at developing and elevating the next generation of insurance professionals.

Spencer will allocate more than half of the grant toward its annual Risk Management Challenge, held in conjunction with the RISKWORLD® conference. The annual challenge is designed for college students to address community issues. In total, 38 university teams from 9 countries participated in this year’s competition. Spencer will invite the top eight teams to present their strategies at the 2024 RISKWORLD conference, which will be held in San Diego, California, from May 5-8.

As sole corporate partner of the challenge, FM Global is contributing toward a significant mission — to support the next generation of insurance professionals by increasing student participation in the RISKWORLD conference year over year with enhanced awards and attendance stipends. More specifically, the funds will cover travel expenses for eight teams from four countries attending RISKWORLD, additional prize funding for the top three teams and more.

“We are a proud supporter of the Spencer Educational Foundation,” said Johnell Holly, senior vice president, Central division manager for FM Global, and president of the Spencer Educational Foundation’s board of directors. “Spencer’s mission to help fund the education of tomorrow’s risk management and insurance leaders aligns with FM Global's science- and research-based approach to risk management and helping our clients protect today for a better tomorrow.”

The remaining funds will be used toward general programs such as scholarships, grants and internships, and to support program-related staff and other program work, including Spencer’s mentorship program and webinar series. All these efforts are designed to create a diverse and robust pool of talent for the industry.

“This is the largest grant over a four-year period that the Spencer Educational Foundation has ever received,” said Megan Miller, executive director of the Spencer Educational Foundation. “We are extremely grateful for FM Global’s ongoing support of our mission and excited to expand the Risk Management Challenge to provide an unparalleled learning experience to students from around the world.”

FM Global has been a dedicated partner of the Spencer Educational Foundation for decades. The long-standing relationship has allowed Spencer to fund dozens of scholarships, develop numerous risk engineering training courses – including risk management college curriculum – sponsor events and provide internships and unrestricted funds for the organization’s daily operations.

The Spencer Educational Foundation Awards over $1.6 Million for Risk Management and Insurance Education

Over 14,000 students reached through 2023 programs, scholarships, and funding

New York, NY (December 15, 2023) - The Spencer Educational Foundation, a leading non-profit organization dedicated to supporting education in risk management and insurance, is wrapping up an exceptional year after awarding over $1.6 million to students as well as the organizations that educate them. Spencer support is allocated solely based on merit rather than financial need. Spencer is also agnostic when university program selections are made; attributes are weighted according to their ability to perpetuate the flow of talent into the insurance industry.

The Spencer Educational Foundation's 2023 success is a testament to the leadership of Spencer’s 26 members of the Board of Directors, the management team, along with Spencer’s trusted reputation of financial support for quality talent and programming amidst a changing landscape of education. Through scholarships, internships, and grants, the foundation continues to inspire and empower the next generation of risk management and insurance professionals.

Spencer made a positive impact on the lives of aspiring risk management and insurance professionals in 2023 by awarding 103 Scholarships, 32 Internship Grants, 22 Risk Manager on Campus Grants, 16 General Grants, and 14 Course Development Grants, totaling over $1.6 million.

"We are immensely grateful to our partners and donors for their dedicated support of our mission to promote education in risk management and insurance," says Megan Miller, Executive Director of the Spencer Educational Foundation. "This generosity has enabled us to provide valuable financial support to talented students pursuing careers in these insurance industry fields."

More than 85% of Spencer scholarship recipients remain in the insurance industry upon graduation. Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students studying risk management, insurance, actuarial science, and other related majors in the US and Canada. The Internship Grants program provides funding for Risk Managers to hire interns in the risk management function of their organizations and offers real-world business environments where interns can quickly apply their knowledge, gain hands-on experience, and develop their industry contacts. The Risk Manager on Campus (RMOC) Grants program provides grants of up to $5,000 for universities to bring a practicing Risk Manager on campus to present and engage with students about the risk management profession and insurance industry over a 1-3-day period, and the General Grants program supports student-centered experiential learning opportunities at universities and industry organizations. Course Development Grants further support the creation and development of introductory and additional RMI courses for US and Canadian universities.

As the year draws to a close, the Spencer Educational Foundation would like to extend its deepest gratitude to all supporters who have contributed to the foundation's success. Their support has allowed the foundation to make meaningful investments in the education and future of talented students.
