Spencer’s iCon University Program is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world professional environments.

This program offers students an unparalleled opportunity to attend RMI industry conferences, where they can gain a deeper understanding of various career paths and insights directly from professionals working in our field.

What is the program?

The iCon University Program is designed to empower students by providing them with practical exposure and valuable connections that can inform their future career decisions within the Risk Management & Insurance (RMI) industry. By participating in conferences and industry events, students gain firsthand experience and insights into their chosen field, which enhances their ability to navigate their professional journey with confidence.

In light of the current talent crisis impacting our industry—with approximately 350,000 open jobs and significant talent acquisition costs—the iCon University Program aims to attract and retain students by offering a realistic perspective on what a career in the industry entails, moving beyond traditional classroom learning to real-world applications.

How does it work?

The program connects donors with students to enhance their conference experiences. Here’s how it works:

  • Event Selection: Donors choose which industry event they want students to attend. This could involve bringing students to conferences hosted by the donor or sending them to other events where the donor will be present.

  • Donor Funding: Spencer reviews the costs associated with sending students to the event. Most events typically cost around $1,000 per student, which qualifies as a tax-deductible donation to a 501(c)(3) charity. The costs include flights, hotel accommodations, ground transportation, meals, and more for students from across the USA.

  • Student Selection: Spencer is responsible for selecting the students who will attend the conferences. We will identify students from across the country who would benefit the most from the experience.

  • Travel Logistics: Spencer manages all travel arrangements for the students. This includes coordinating transportation to and from the conference venue, ensuring a smooth experience for all.

  • Pre-Event Preparation: Before the conference, Spencer provides hands-on guidance and training to help students prepare. This includes briefing them on what to expect and clarifying their responsibilities during the event.

  • Conference Program Support: Spencer assists in integrating students into the conference program. This may involve including them in opening remarks, panel discussions, or creating specific sessions tailored for students.

  • On-Site Chaperoning: During the conference, Spencer chaperones the students, facilitating networking opportunities and ensuring they make the most of their experience by connecting with other attendees.

Student Testimonials

“Thanks to the Spencer Educational Foundation, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Lockton 2025 Complex Risk Symposium in St. Louis, MO. This event provided a unique platform to connect with over 275 leaders in the property and casualty industry, spanning risk management, underwriting, broking, consulting, and more.

Attending this symposium not only broadened my knowledge but also transformed my perspective on what it truly means to grow within this dynamic field. I am profoundly grateful to Lockton and Spencer for opening doors for students like me!”
