2013 Gala Dinner

Foundation to honor Zurich's Michael Kerner and Ryan Specialty Group's Patrick Ryan

Spencer Educational Foundation, Inc. will honor Michael Kerner, CEO General Insurance for Zurich, and Patrick G. Ryan, chairman and CEO of Ryan Specialty Group, LLC, at its fifth annual fundraising gala on September 17, 2013, at the Waldorf Astoria New York. The honorees were recognized for their contributions to the advancement of risk management and insurance educational opportunities.

Kerner is a member of the Group Executive Committee and the CEO of General Insurance of Zurich Insurance Group Ltd (Zurich). Prior to that, he was CEO for Zurich’s Global Corporate in North America. Kerner joined Zurich in 1992 from the Continental Insurance Company, and since then has held a number of senior executive positions. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Economics from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Ryan, the founder and retired chairman and CEO of Aon Corporation, launched Ryan Specialty Group, LLC, in 2010. Ryan Specialty Group is a global holding company that consists of a wide range of highly specialized MGUs/MGAs, a wholesale brokerage, and a Lloyd’s insurer. Aon Corporation is one of the world’s largest insurance and reinsurance brokers. When Ryan retired from Aon, the company had more than 500 offices in 120 countries, generating revenues then in excess of $7 billion. Ryan’s accolades include a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from his alma mater, Northwestern University. In 2008, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, one of the nation's oldest and most prestigious honorary societies and independent research centers. Also in 2008, he was elected to the International Insurance Society Hall of Fame and received the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award.

The 22nd Annual Spencer/Gallagher Golf Tournament will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at the picturesque Robinson Ranch in Santa Clarita, CA. A look back at the 2012 Gala Dinner

The Spencer Educational Foundation, Inc. hosted its fourth annual fundraising gala on September 12, 2012, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. During the event, the Foundation honor Seraina Maag, chief executive -- North America property and casualty for XL Insurance, and David Zuercher, retired head of insurance for Wells Fargo and Company, for their contributions to the advancement of risk management and insurance educational opportunities. Spencer Scholars Drew Carey and Gisselle Escotto spoke at the event. John Amore, CEO General Insurance of Zurich (retired), was the evening's master of ceremonies.

The 2013 Gala Dinner will be held on September 17 in New York. More details will be announced this Spring.
